Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is characterized as a prolonged pattern of impulsiveness and hyperactivity. Specifically, individuals with ADHD have difficulty focusing or transitioning from one task to another. Because cognitive training improves various cognitive functions, it begs the question on whether not cognitive training could help individuals who live with ADHD.
It’s no secret that people with ADHD sometimes struggle with forming relationships and careers because of their condition. Many of these people opt for medication or behavioral therapy to help their symptoms. Thankfully, the medical community is searching for alternative methods of treatment. In recent years, studies have focused on how improved brain function through cognitive training can help relieve some of the symptoms of ADHD. The results are interesting.
The ADHD Study
According to one study called Cognitive Training for Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder: Meta Analysis of Clinical Neuropsychological from Randomized Control Trials, there is some significance to using cognitive training for those who live with ADHD. Essentially, the studied examined how cognitive training impacted the lives of over 700 children with ADHD. The results showcased that the biggest improvement was seen in working memory performance. Of course, this is an area that is commonly improved for anybody who participates in cognitive training and is not necessarily an area that is considered largely impacted by ADHD symptoms.
However, the study indicates that approaches that “target multiple neuropsychological may optimize the transfer of effects from cognitive deficits to clinical symptoms.” This suggests that perhaps, cognitive training could potentially improve the symptoms of the disorder if such training is more targeted. This proves how far-reaching cognitive training is and will potentially be as we continue to utilize it.
